Snow Ski - Snow Board Loop and Pin

Tiger, Wolfs, Bears and Webelos Scouts may complete these requirements in a family, den, pack, school, or community environment.

Tiger Cubs must work with their parents or adult partners. Parents and partners do not earn loops or pins.

Requirements for the Snow Ski and Board Sports Belt Loop

Complete these three requirements:

  1. Explain conditioning, clothing, equipment, and planning needed for snow skiing or boarding.

  2. Be able to explain safety and courtesy codes for a downhill or cross-country trip.

  3. Go skiing or snow boarding. Demonstrate how to stop and turn.

Requirements for the Snow Ski and Board Sports Pin

Earn the Snow Ski and Board Sports belt loop, and complete five of the following requirements:

  1. Explain the different categories of ski lifts. Use one.

  2. Describe the four universal symbols used to indicate ski trail difficulty.

  3. Demonstrate how to hold your position, get up from a fall, and do basic turns.

  4. Demonstrate how to fall safely to avoid injury.

  5. Demonstrate five cross country skills, such as a kick turn, diagonal stride, double pole, side-step, step turn, herringbone, straight downhill running, cross-country snowplow, sideslipping, pole drag, diagonal stride uphill, and traverse.

  6. Participate in a game using skis or boards; such as relays, races, or racing around poles or flags.

  7. Explain what to do if you see a skiing or snow boarding accident. Discuss the dangers of avalanche.

  8. Take skiing or snow boarding lessons.

  9. View a film on skiing or snow boarding.

  10. Talk with a member of a ski patrol and learn about the job he or she does at the ski slope.

Downhill Skier's Responsibility Code

  1. Ski under control and in such a manner so that you can stop at any time or avoid other skiers or objects.

  2. When passing or overtaking another skier you must avoid the skier below you.

  3. You should not stop where you obstruct a trail or are not visible from above.

  4. When entering a trail or starting a descent yield to other skiers.

  5. Check your equipment daily - particulary your release bindings. All skiers must use devices while skiing to help prevent runaway skis. Runaway skis can be lethal whether on the trial of from falling from an aerial list. You have a responsibility to your fellow skiers to prevent injury to them.

  6. You shall keep off posted trails and posted areas and observe all posted signs.

  7. Follow instructions carefully when using ski lifts.

  8. Please observe all posted "slow skiing areas".

  9. Do not ski slopes too difficult for your ability.

  10. Do not jump or perform "aerial" maneuvers.

Cross Country Skier's Responsibility Code

  1. Always ski in control.

  2. Observe all signs and posted warnings.

  3. Keep off all closed trails.

  4. Always ski to the right when passing on-coming skiers and when skiing a double track.

  5. On a two-way trail, descending skiers always have the right-of-way.

  6. Don’t litter. If you pack it in pack it out and respect private property.

  7. Yield the track to faster skiers or skiers saying "Track".

  8. Stay clear of snow grooming equipment and personnel.

  9. Report all accidents.

Steps to Follow:

  1. Download and Print Worksheet at bottom of page

  2. Scout completes Worksheet

  3. Turn completed Worksheet into your Den Leader

  4. Den Leader may have questions for your Scout

  5. Den Leader will enter completion date into Tracking Software

  6. Scout will be awarded Loop a/o Pin at the next Pack Meeting

  7. Limit of Two Loops and Two Pins per Month
